Southwest Medical Center Welcomes Dr. Maraist

Southwest Medical Center recently welcomed Dr. David Maraist, Podiatrist, to its medical staff.  Dr. Maraist is the latest physician to join the Hamilton Medical Group.  He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot including bunions, warts, corns and callouses, hammer toes, fractures, diabetic foot and wound care problems, heel pain, sprains, sports-related foot and ankle problems and arthritis conditions.  He also performs reconstructive foot surgery and provides custom orthotics. 

Dr. Maraist most recently was Chief Resident at East Jefferson General Hospital.  He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Louisiana Podiatric Medical Association. 

Dr. Maraist's office is located in the Medical Office Building at 4212 West Congress Street, Suite 1800.

Southwest Medical Center recently welcomed Dr. Irfan Alam, Board-Certified Gastroenterologist, to its medical staff.

Dr. Alam specializes in the the evaluation and treatment of digestive problems including heartburn (acid reflux), nausea, ulcers, stomach problems, swallowing problems, diverticulosis, diarrhea, constipation, gallbladder and liver disease.  Dr. Alam is also experienced in colon cancer screenings.

His office is located in the medical office building (next to Southwest Medical Center) at 4212 West Congress Street, Suite 2400 E.

Southwest Launches New Seminar Series

Southwest Medical Center will begin to offer monthly seminars on hip and knee pain.   The seminars will feature speaker, Dr Bryan Frentz, Orthopedic Surgeon.  Dr Frentz will present and discuss the latest advancements and treatment for hip pain.  The first in the seminar series will be held on Wednesday, July 23 at 6 PM.  The seminar location is the medical office building at 4212 West Congress, next to Southwest Medical Center.  The meeting room is on the first floor of the medical office building.  Anyone who is interested in learning about the most current medical technology for the treatment of hip pain is encouraged to attend.  There is no charge to attend but registration is required.    The August seminar will feature knee pain and the official date will be announced soon.

Southwest Medical Center recently welcomed Board Certified Family Medicine physician, Dr. Elizabeth McLain, to its medical staff.  Dr. McLain dedicates her practice to general internal medicine, with an emphasis on good health through lifestyle changes and nutrition.  She is experienced in women's health and wellness, providing pap smears and breast exams.  She has a special interest in dermatology, peforming biopsies of suspicious lesions as well as in-office microdermabrasions.    Dr. McLain's office is located in the Medical Office Building at 4212 W. Southwest Medical Center has received a Bronze Level 2007 Louisiana Hospital Quality Award, presented by Louisiana Health Care Review, Inc., the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Louisiana. Southwest Medical was presented the award for improving the quality of health care for its patients in the clinical areas of Pneumonia and Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack).

"I want to extend my congratulations and appreciation to every employee and physician for their efforts in making this achievement possible.  We should all be very proud of the quality improvement initiatives being carried out at Southwest.  We are realizing direct benefits as patient health improves and lives are saved," states Kyle Viator, Chief Executive Officer. 

The Hospital Quality Award is based on select criteria and measured improvements in the specified clinical areas.  To be eligible for the award, hospitals must have shown a minimum 10% improvement rate during the 2006 calendar year in at least one of the four clinical areas.

Dr. Raghotham Patlola, Interventional Cardiologist at CIS Lafayette, has successfully completed the requirements of the American Board of Vascular Medicine (ABVM) for certification in endovascular medicine.

Patlola completed the accredited course of education and training in vascular/endovascular medicine and has passed an additional rigorous examination in endovascular medicine, which demonstrates a high standard of physician excellence.  This certification provides evidence of expertise in vascular medicine knowledge and skills to the medical community.

Southwest Medical Introduces New Seizure Monitoring Equipment

Southwest Medical Center recently acquired the latest technology for long-term monitoring of seizures. The Long-Term EEG Monitoring Lab at Southwest is appropriate for patients experiencing syncope, epilepsy, a history of seizures or sudden, unexplained seizure activity.

The equipment will allow medical professionals to monitor brain activity as well as observe and videotape behavioral patient activity for extended periods of time (3 to 10 days continuously) which will enable the physician to make an accurate diagnosis and treat the patient appropriately.

Dr. Enrique Serrano and Dr. David Weir, Neurologists with Southwest Neuroscience Center in Lafayette, agree that this new technology allows for a comprehensive approach to seizure monitoring in a controlled medical environment.

Mitchell Lirtzman, MD Receives Advocacy Award

The American Heart Association has honored Dr. Mitchell Lirtzman with the 2007 Outstanding Advocate Award.  The award was presented at the Greater Acadiana Heart Walk in Lafayette on Saturday, November 10.

The award recognizes an individual who has worked to advance the public policy goals of the American Heart Association.  The American Heart Association's Mission is to reduce death and disability from heart disease and stroke by 25% by 2010.

This year Dr. Lirtzman, Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgeon with Cardiovascular Institute of the South, was honored for his work during the period of July 1, 2006 through June 31, 2007.  During this time period, Dr. Lirtzman helped defend the Louisiana Smoke-Free Air Act by providing testimony and writing letters to the editors as a expert witness.  In January 2007, Dr. Lirtzman became Chairman of the Louisiana Policy & Advocacy Committee for the American Heart Association.

Southwest Medical Center congratulates Dr. Lirtzman on this outstanding achievement.
